Board members with Union Local Schools voted 3-2 Thursday to implement a pay-to-play policy for the school district next year.
After the issue was tabled once by board member Todd Kidlow, it was followed by heavy debate among the board and residents.
News9 reports that the policy now put in place will take effect this fall.
Student athletes wishing to partake in any sporting event will be asked to pay $100 to play.
Board members Todd Kidlow and Allen Mann voted against the policy, whereas board president Doug Kemp, Ed Stenger and Stan Sobel voted for it.
The board also voted to eliminate three teaching positions for the 2011-2012 school year as a cost-saving measure.
