I watched a movie this weekend that was one of the most gutwrenching, riveting, disgusting, deplorable, uplifting movies I have ever seen.  Let me throw one more adjective in there:  POWERFUL.

The movie is 12 Years A Slave.  Every history teacher in America should make their class watch this, every parent should make their kids watch this and you should watch it.  Why?  Because it's a powerful reminder of what went on in this country and it reminds us all how brutal we can be to one another.

This movie also drives home my reasoning for the eradication of the N-word from our vocabulary.  I would like to make every rap artist, NFL player or anyone who thinks the N-word is appropriate to use in todays society as a means of endearment watch this movie and then tell me how they can justify it's use in any way, shape or form.  This movie hits a homerun when it comes to how abusive, degrading and disgusting this word was and still is.  12 Years A Slave is right up there with Schindler's List as a teaching tool.  The lesson?  Never forget that where you are today is because of others pain and misfortune.
