The incident at Franklin Regional High School in Murrysville brings me right back to what I believe is the biggest problem facing teenagers today....and that is not being able to handle adversity. There are many reasons for the actions of individuals like 16 year old Alex Hribal...but I think my reason is the most prevalent.
Parents today are so obsessed with their kids success that they do everything for them. "Helicopter parents" hover over their kids every move...taking care of their mistakes and handling the pressure for them. The result? Young adults who don't know how to deal with the up's and down's of life. So a situation arises (bullying in most cases) and they don't have the means of coping because it's been done for them. They don't know how to deal with failure. They don't know how to deal with rejection. They don't know how to pick themselves up or fight back. Bottom line...they don't get to build heart and character because they have been coddled. To me....this is the biggest contributor to the mass violence we see in schools.
