Wheeling Island To Host $100,000 Mountaineer Classic Final Saturday

WHEELING, WV: Wheeling Island Hotel-Casino-Racetrack will play host to the annual $100,000 Mountaineer Classic final this Saturday afternoon. More than 50 of the nation’s best greyhounds entered qualifying races looking to secure a spot in the 8-competitor finale, in which the field was determined by results of three preliminary rounds and a semifinal which wrapped up last Sunday. Three different kennels have landed multiple spots in the final as the Blanchard Kennel, Lester Raines Kennel, and Jacobs Racing, will each send two dogs to the post for the event. The Blanchard Kennel duo is highlighted by Penrose Boss, who tallied the most qualifying round points and finished in the top 2 of each qualifying start, while the Raines Kennel contingent features Teaser’s Tickle, who has won his last three starts in dominating fashion. Regional President & General Manager Kim Florence said of the event, “We’re thrilled to host the Mountaineer Classic, which is renowned throughout the country as one of the biggest annual events in greyhound racing. The idea behind putting up a $100,000 purse is to attract the best greyhounds in the country and to host an event that creates tremendous excitement for our guests and fans of greyhound racing in general, and we feel like that is certainly the case this year.” Post time for the first race is 1 pm Saturday, with the Mountaineer Classic final taking place at approximately 3:30 pm as the twelfth race of the day.
