West Liberty Announces 2023 Football Schedule

WEST LIBERTY, W.Va. – The West Liberty University football team will kick off a full 11-game schedule under the Thursday Night Lights on Aug. 31 when veteran head coach Roger Waialae and his Hilltoppers head to North Canton, Ohio to take on Walsh University in a mutual season opener.

Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Larry Staudt Field on the Walsh University campus.

The Cavaliers will be the only non-conference opponent of the season for West Liberty and there are no open dates on the 11-game slate as, following the Walsh game, the Black and Gold will play 10 consecutive Mountain East Conference opponents over the next 10 weeks.

The MEC released its full slate of conference games on Thursday with all conference games listed as Saturday kickoffs. However, the conference noted that it will continue to work with the schools to move some games to Thursday nights. An updated schedule including all Thursday night games will be released at a later date.

West Liberty will host Fairmont State in a mutual conference opener the week of Sept. 9 with the first road game of the season taking WLU to Frostburg State the following week. UNC-Pembroke will be the Hilltoppers’ Homecoming opponent on Sept. 23. West Liberty closes out the September portion of its schedule with the long trek to Concord on Sept. 30.

Glenville State will be the Hilltoppers’ first October foe, rolling into town the week of Oct. 7. The Oct. 14 date sees West Liberty heading down to Buckhannon to take on West Virginia Wesleyan before coming back to West Family Stadium the week of Oct. 21 to host Notre Dame (Ohio).

Back-to-back road games at Alderson Broaddus and Charleston follow before closing out the schedule at home against Ohio County rival Wheeling on Nov. 11.
