California Governor Signs Law To Limit Water Use

California has now become the first state in the nation to sign in a law that limits how many gallons of water a person can use in their homes each day.

Yes, really.

This is a new law that was recently signed in by governor Jerry Brown.

The law states that in 2022, the new indoor water standard will be 55 gallons per person, per day. In 2030, that number is expected to fall down to 50 gallons per person.

For comparison -

  • An 8-minute shower uses about 17 gallons of water.
  • A load of laundry uses up to 40 gallons.
  • A bathtub can holds 80 to 100 gallons of water.

The law also requires California water districts to stress test their water supplies and monitor leaks in order to help stop water loss. And if they don't comply, they could face fines of up to $10,000 a day.

The State Water Resources Control Board says the ultimate goal of this law is to "make conservation a way of life in California."
