Last week, Cincinnati police released bodycam footage of an incident from last fall, where one of their officers prevented a woman in distress from jumping from the top of a parking garage. Specialist Kevin Newman, along with other officers, responded to the scene and worked to de-escalate the situation.
The video shows officers rushing to the top level of the garage, where they find the woman visibly upset. Officer Newman attempts to calm her, saying, “I know times are tough, but listen to me, don’t jump. Let us help you.” During the four-minute encounter, the officer speaks with the woman about their shared experience of losing children, offering words of comfort.
After about three minutes of talking, Newman convinces her to accept their help and then officers rush to pull the woman, who’s hanging on the outside of the structure, safely back over the railing. The Cincinnati Police Department shared the footage on social media, thanking officers Newman and Ramey for “keeping our community safe.”
