A British police officer and his K9 partner are being recognized for risking their lives to safely take down a man wielding a shovel in a burning home. Last year, Police Constable Tom Marsden and his police dog Yoiko of Humberside Police were attacked during a call in Hull, England. A man had barricaded himself in a home, set items on fire, and was armed with a shovel when they entered the smoke-filled room.
The suspect swung at the officer, who blocked the blow, then Yoiko leapt to protect his handler, stopping the attacker. Marsden describes how the man threatened to kill Yoiko and any officers and how the K9 bravely reacted despite the risks. Officers eventually brought the man under control and arrested him at the scene.
For their actions, Marsden and Yoiko received the Outstanding Bravery Award at the Thin Blue Paw Award Ceremony in London last week. Humberside Police leaders praised the pair for their courage and professionalism in bringing the incident to a safe conclusion.
