Earlier this month, a father and son were riding an all-terrain vehicle in the Florida Everglades when it ran out of gas and became stuck in the mud just as the sun set. To make matters worse, the pair were running low on water and had lost their shoes in the thick mud.
They called 911 and shared their location, allowing deputies to track them from the air. Rescue crews spotted a small fire the pair had built to stay warm, helping guide teams on the ground to their location.
The father and son were safely airlifted out and despite being shaken by the experience, they were unharmed. The Collier County Sheriff’s Office credits the successful rescue operation to good training and coordination between agencies.
